Portrait of Mr. Alan Sponzilli
Sponz, as we called him, would drive out from NYC in his blue Corvette Stingray. Once he saw me walking to school on Harristown Road and he gave me a ride the rest of the way. When he first got to GRHS there were problems with students trashing the walls of the restrooms. He had members of his art class paint murals on the walls, and the problem disappeared. The art rooms were also painted with murals.
We all loved Sponz and I can honestly say that his program and all the teachers that were part of it saved my life.
From a 1978 New York Times Article:
“I feel that there shouldn’t be a line between students and teachers,” he asserted. “I expect the students to listen to me and to respect me, but I also must listen to them and respect them.” - Alan Sponzilli
